With handmade, every piece has a story. A handmade item is and item made with hands that put love into that piece, not just a piece of machinery that do not have the same eye for quality or creativity that sparks a passion.
Laura Reiger
I love animals, but snakes are tails with faces. I will eat macaroni and cheese every day for the rest of my life and not get sick of it. While I make jewelry, I like to watch my favorite episodes of Monk. I recently became a vegetarian, but I hate vegetables.
What got you started crafting?
I would like to say that I started crafting because of my love of handmade and the fact that I am trying to hold back on supporting huge companies. While that is partially true, I really started crafting because as a young gal I found drawing my cat fascinating... and then I started painting pictures of him... and trying to knit scarves for him... and sewing collars and beds for him. I might have even considered piercing his ears so he could wear the earrings I made for him. I guess those hobbies and a love of creating stuck with me, but I did get over the cat phase. Or the cat got over me. Maybe I was overbearing. I don't know.
What is your source of inspiration?
Inspiration comes from colors and textures and what I see on a day to day basis. The majority of my ideas come from color schemes I see in nature, many times from just taking my dogs for a walk in my neighborhood. I am also very inspired from vintage items, which I have always had a knack for. I remember going through vintage and antique shops every time we took a road trip. To many people, antique shops are dumpy shacks that sell junk at outrageous prices- but to me, they might as well be full of diamonds and gold.
What have you made recently?
I recently bought a sewing machine- better than the one I used to make "collars" for my cat with- and the first actual thing I made was a dog leash. You can tell I'm still obsessed with making things for my pets. It was so fun picking out the webbing, and the ribbon to use as a design. It is probably the worst looking dog leash anyone has ever made. There were threads sticking out all over the place, and the ribbon was all off center, and I didn't know how strong I should make the handle so there are about 19 rows of stitching. I won't be selling any dog leashes any time soon. The good part is that it has help up so far this week! I think my Corgi, Sherlock, loves it, too.
Where do you sell your crafts presently?
I currently sell my jewelry on my own website, but I'm also starting to sell on daily boutique deal sites. I just started my website and haven't made very many sales, but I'm still working on it! Someday, I would love to open a "real" shop in some trendy area one day and become my own little Tiffany & Co.
Why are handmade crafts important to you?
With handmade, every piece has a story. A handmade item is and item made with hands that put love into that piece, not just a piece of machinery that do not have the same eye for quality or creativity that sparks a passion.
