What got you started crafting?
I started crafting as a scrapbooker about ten years ago. One day I ran out of things to scrapbook and I sewed a purse. This was the first thing I had sewn since a Jr. High home economics course. It felt so good that I started sewing more and more, even making my own patterns eventually.
Then I discovered clay and wood and cement...and the rest is crafting history...
What is your source of inspiration?
I am mostly inspired by my materials. I often browse the local craft or art stores and think, "I wonder what I could make with that?" I love to push myself to use new materials and gain new crafty skills.
What have you made recently?
Recently I have been making distressed painted wall hangings out of wood. I feel like these pieces are very transitional for me, blurring the line between craft and art. I cut the wood with my husband's power saw (which makes me feels very tough), sand and paint the wood and then put it back together.
Working with wood this way reminds me of my first love (sewing) but with harder materials.
Where do you sell your crafts presently?
I sell my crafts on Etsy at 645workshop.etsy.com.
Why are handmade crafts important to you?
I'm obsessed with the process of taking a pile of fabric, a lump of clay, pieces of wood, or a cup full of cement and making it into something beautiful or useful. I still amaze myself every time pieces come out exactly the way I planned (or even better than I expected). And I love to laugh at myself and show my friends the "craft fails".
When you can turn a "craft fail" into something beautiful? There is nothing more magical.
