Because the world we live in is too concerned with money and mass production instead of timeless, unique pieces that are deeply personal.
Machelle Garlick
I have a twin, Malissa, whom I run my etsy shop with; I moved to Belize for a little while when I got sick of college; I want to go into graphic design and I love music and attending concerts.
What got you started crafting?
Growing up our mom always made clothing for me and my sister and this sparked an early interest in sewing and handmade goods. In high school I started making clothes and bags toward the end of sophomore year. A little later my interest in doing crafts for myself grew to an interest in selling mine and my twin's wares to others and we finally decided to sell on etsy.
What is your source of inspiration?
A lot of my inspiration comes from previous eras, the 19th century on, and I strive to incorporate that in my housewares and accessories but I also get a lot of inspiration from my twin. Sometimes the best ideas come when we are bouncing thoughts off each other and we create something truly unique.
What have you made recently?
I have recently been making more pillows as sewing is something I have always loved. I have a few pillows that incorporate fabric flowers and are made of satin and organza, just very girly and pretty! These pillows are quite time-consuming since I make each individual flower by hand from layers of fabric and then sew it all together. They are inspired by a lot of things but mainly nature and are partly an off-shoot of my hair accessories. I think it is important to give handmade items a personal touch and I feel like the best way to do that is make sure that everything is well-made and unique.
Where do you sell your crafts presently?
I have attended several craft fairs but mostly through Etsy.
Why are handmade crafts important to you?
Because the world we live in is too concerned with money and mass production instead of timeless, unique pieces that are deeply personal.
