Too many photos these days are made to be facebooked and forgotten. Canvas prints with handmade frames are works both the viewer and the artist can enjoy.
Wayne Tilcock
My main job is as a sports photographer but I can't tell you who won the last Super Bowl or NBA Championship.
I hand built my baby daughter's dresser and armoire.
I have a degree in chemical engineering and use none of it in my job as a photographer.
I like doing the dishes.
What got you started crafting?
My dad used to hand built sail and row boats at home. As a little kid I'd sit in the garage and watch the process of turning small pieces of wood into something big and useful. When I grew up my passion turned to photography, spending hours in the darkroom in college. Now that digital photography has become prominent my workflow seemed to involve more time sitting in front of a computer with virtual work than being physically involved in the development of tangible products. Making and mounting my own canvas prints has helped put that hands-on feel back to my passion.
What is your source of inspiration?
Sunsets and flowers. They pass quickly but photos can keep them permanently at their peak.
What have you made recently?
There was a sunflower field about 20 minutes north of town that had stately old oak tree in the middle of it. I found the field when the plants were just seedlings and had planned to come back when the field was in full bloom to get a photo of the oak surrounded by sunflowers. Unfortunately when I returned the flower heads had already become too heavy and the golden glow around the oak was not what I had hoped. So I pulled out my portrait lighting and turned my focus to some of the smaller flowers. With a few clouds in the sky the field still gave me a nice photo of two flowers basking in the mid-morning sun.
Where do you sell your crafts presently?
A growing collection of photos are available at my etsy shop and on my personal website.
