Organic and Cute, Awesome Together

in Featured Crafters, Handmade, Knitting on 02/08/11

Handmade is real. Handmade is open and true and nice! I love to make things that people can use, and I love to buy things made by a PERSON! or a FAMILY! or a FRIENDSHIP!

Heather Meagher

Random Facts About You?

1. My favorite song is "Beautiful World" by Colin Hay. He was the lead singer of Men At Work and his acoustic songs are so open and amazing, you will want to live inside them.
2. I am a public librarian! I am always telling people about the cool stuff they're missing when they don't visit their libraries - music cds, movies, magazines, downloadable books - and print books, too!
3. I love wearing glasses. I have black frames. When I see other black-framed bespectacled people, I say "Glasses twin!" My fiance is my glasses twin, and it is one of the first things we ever talked about.
4. I was never great at math or science, but now that I make things that deal with concepts from both, I have a much better understanding of the way the world works. And I'm totally interested in quarks.

What got you started crafting?

I wanted to learn how to knit so badly I could taste it! One of my friends tried to teach me, but I couldn't get past the second row. Then, I was watching the first season of Grey's Anatomy (where Meredith starts knitting to avoid bad relationships) and I just - got it! A knitting epiphany! I've always put things together and made odds and ends into something pretty to put up on the bulletin board, but I thought that was just fooling around. And then I realized that not everyone can do that! I love to make things. It is calming and peaceful and superfun!

What is your source of inspiration?

I wanted to make affordable organic cotton baby hats. Organic cotton is super expensive, so we all have to charge more for the products. I make one size, and one style, so that I can keep my costs down! I started out just making for friends' babies, and then decided to start selling them! The organic part is important, because cotton really absorbs a lot of the pesticides that are sprayed on regular crops! And then that's on your baby!

What have you made recently?

I am in the middle of knitting a baby blanket for one of my dearest friends! It is shades of lighter and darker pink with a little green thrown in. I love to knit the stiches and watch them create the lines and watch the fabric begin to grow! Knitting is such an amazing thing. I knit everywhere - and for everyone! When people stop me, while I'm waiting in line or whatever - and tell me they can't knit, that I must be so talented, I say "It's just knots". They are always amazed when I explain that part! I love to work on a little bit of different things each day. I always have a few projects going at once!

Where do you sell your crafts presently?

I sell on Etsy. I love to see what everyone else is doing and how many people out there can take beautiful, well-lit pictures!

Why are handmade crafts important to you?

Handmade is real. Handmade is open and true and nice! I love to make things that people can use, and I love to buy things made by a PERSON! or a FAMILY! or a FRIENDSHIP! With all of the technology and machinery and quickness out there, it's nice to slow down and appreciate someone's workmanship or their wit or their genius!
