What got you started crafting?
When I lost my job I decided I needed to find something to do to keep me busy, but it had to be something I really liked. I've been sewing on and off for years and a friend asked me to make her a diaper bag because she didn't like the ones in the store. I started making a couple for other people and some of the women suggested I try and sell them on Etsy. I had never even heard of Etsy so decided to check it out. I celebrated my 1 year anniversary in June and still love it. :)
What is your source of inspiration?
When I started out I only made diaper bags and loved the feeling of making them for moms-to-be. It also made me feel so good when they really liked what I made. Making something for someone who really appreciates it is a great feeling. I've recently added some matching items along with some change purses, card holders and wristlets, but making diaper bags is what I enjoy most.
What have you made recently?
I started adding matching waterproof changing pads, paci holders and bibs to go with my diaper bags and they are my most recent items. I've made them as gifts for my friends and they really like the fact of having everything match. My custom diaper bags come with a changing pad and you can also buy bibs and paci holders to match them, which makes for a great baby shower present. I always order extra material in case someone either wants to add matching items to their bag order or they want to purchase a gift set of a changing pad, bibs and paci holder.
In the case of my waterproof changing pads, after making a diaper bag which has a special pocket on the back to hold the changing pad, I either, depending on the buyers preference, make the whole exterior of the pad out of the exterior material of the bag or add a strip of the lining material at both ends for a little variation. I use waterproof PUL material on the back side so it can be wiped clean easily and has a layer of Warm & Natural batting in the middle to give a soft and cushy place to change the baby. I started adding some baby appliques to one corner of the pad and it has a velcro strap to keep it together when not in use.
Where do you sell your crafts presently?
I sell my items on Etsy and also attend local craft fairs.
Why are handmade crafts important to you?
I love making custom handmade diaper bags because the customer can decide on a lot of options for her personal item. They are so much softer than the marketplace bags and you can choose whatever material you like, which is a great option.
