My source of inspiration is my daughter Mikayla Aleah. Initially, when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter at just 20 years old, I didn’t know what to think. I was living with my parents and hadn’t even finished college. At that point my life could have taken a turn for the worst but instead it made me a stronger person. Not only did I continue my education but I excelled better then I ever have and will be graduating this year with honors. She also gave me the push to follow my dreams and open my business, which I named after her Kayla’s Tutu Closet.

Aside of my love for designing, I also love to help others. After the hurricane in Haiti, two of my friends and I created an organization called Dresses for Haiti. We decided to take a skill that we know well and turn it into a charitable cause. Dresses for Haiti is an organization committed to creating awareness for the rights of women, children, minorities, and women affected by natural disasters and other institutions preventing them from excelling. We recently took a trip over to Haiti and donated over 100 pillow case dresses to an elementary school that was affected by the hurricane.
What got you started crafting?
I have been designing since a very young age. I remember being a little girl looking at clothing catalogs for my barbies and asking my mother how I could recreate the outfits I liked. I got my first sewing machine when I was around 6 years old, it was a toy battery operated sewing machine which I took with me everywhere.
What is your source of inspiration?
My source of inspiration is my daughter Mikayla Aleah. Initially, when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter at just 20 years old, I didn’t know what to think. I was living with my parents and hadn’t even finished college. At that point my life could have taken a turn for the worst but instead it made me a stronger person. Not only did I continue my education but I excelled better then I ever have and will be graduating this year with honers. She also gave me the push to follow my dreams and open my business, which I named after her Kayla's Tutu Closet.
What have you made recently?
One recent item that I created was my Cheetah Girl Sunsuit Romper and over the top bow for my daughter. At just 7 months old she is already a little prima donna, she loves to stare at herself in the mirror for hours and getting pampered so I just knew the cheetah and hot pink fabric would be perfect for her personality. I spent hours walking up and down the fashion district in search for the perfect fabrics and embellishments for her outfit. One of the reasons why I chose to sell my items "made to order" is because I can have the specific customer in mind when I go out to look for my fabrics and I get to find those special pieces that would be perfect for that individual.
Where do you sell your crafts presently?
My designs can be purchased through my facebook fan page, which is facebook.com/kaylastutucloset All of my products are made to order and can be customized any why the costumer wants it. I personally love creating custom designs because I get to see how creative every individual is in their own way. 10% of all purchases are donated to Dresses for Haiti.
Why are handmade crafts important to you?
With handmade goods no one product is ever a like. I love having those personal touches added to a product. Every individual is unique in their own way and their products should be too.
