Buying handmade items is so much more personal than buying something from the store. Someone put their hard work into it and made it special just for you. You also know that you are helping support that person, not just a money hungry corporation. Each item a crafter makes is one of a kind, as opposed to a mass produced item from a store.
Rachel Steck
I have been a Vegetarian for about 7 years. I love keeping myself fit. I own my own knitting business through a website called Etsy. I know sign language because both of my boyfriends parents are deaf.
What got you started crafting?
My mom taught me to knit when I was in high school. It took me awhile to pick it up and understand the lingo but now I can knit without looking at my needles and I feel like knitting for me is therapeutic.
What is your source of inspiration?
My inspiration was the satisfaction of my first customer. They loved the detail, the colors and texture and they also really appreciated the final product. I took a vision they had in their head and shaped it into a masterpiece of a scarf. Ever since that I have been working very hard on my scarves so that one day I can quit my day job and follow my passion of knitting full time.
What have you made recently?
I literally just yesterday made my first Iphone case. I have had an Iphone for about two years now and I don't know why I didn't think to make one sooner! I totally just started knitting a rectangle shape and sewed it up the sides. I used my favorite color pink and added a black button to close up the top. I am always experimenting and trying to improve upon my last item.
Where do you sell your crafts presently?
I sold my scarves to friends and coworkers until a friend introduced me to Etsy.com. Its a Marketplace like ebay for only handmade and vintage items. It has really expanded my business and has helped me expand as a knitter and homemade crafter.
Why are handmade crafts important to you?
