One-of-a-Kind Amigurumi Dolls

in Featured Crafters, Handmade, Toys on 05/03/11

I get inspired by colour combinations, by things that happen during the day, by things I read in books. I am part of the Etsy Plush Team and that also helps with inspiration – we have team challenges and seeing other people’s amazing work always inspires me to work harder and try something new.

Random Facts About You?

My slippers are blue with white spots

I live in Bosina and Herzegovina where I work for a charity called Novi Most

I can play 7 different musical instruments although not at the same time

I love Hello Kitty

What got you started crafting?

I've always loved making things - my Mum and my Grandma taught me to make things and to be creative from a young age. I got into making amigurumi about 2 years ago. I decided I wanted to remember how to crochet and so I googled for tutorials and found lots about amigurumi. I picked up the technique really quickly and I've been making and designing one of a kind dolls ever since.

What is your source of inspiration?

hmmmm... I don't know if I have a source. I get inspired by colour combinations, by things that happen during the day, by things I read in books. I am part of the Etsy Plush Team and that also helps with inspiration - we have team challenges and seeing other people's amazing work always inspires me to work harder and try something new.

What have you made recently?

At the moment I'm making a doll for a craft swap. I have looked at my swap partner's blog and Etsy shop and this put into my mind the kind of doll I wanted to make - something that reflects her personality - or the personality I see through her blog (I've never met her in real life!) So I started by choosing a colour combination that felt right for this doll and by thinking about the style of clothes the doll will wear - young, trendy and a bit of vintage! I always make the head first and then go on to the body and see how it all develops. I'm nearly done - I just need to finish the legs! All my dolls are one of a kind and have a distinctive style. Most of them have bare feet with 4 toes on each foot! although I think this one might be wearing shoes.... we'll see. I also use labels on all my dolls so they can be identified as made by me.

Where do you sell your crafts presently?

I sell my dolls on Etsy and I have sent a few of them to gallery shows in the USA - Seattle and Milwaukee.

Why are handmade crafts important to you?

Handmade gives you a choice of totally original things. I love giving handmade gifts - not just made by me, but things bought from other Etsy artists. You can always find something that really fits with the person you are giving to and you know they won't already have it!
