Janis and Megan share some unique jewelry ideas and home accessories. I am also very jealous of their upcoming adventure – visiting every state in the U.S. – maybe I will join you!
Janis Casto and Megan Pikula
We met at the age of 16.
Muck A Duck has its own team in a local bowling league.
Our husbands have been friends since middle school.
We are planning to visit each and every state over the next 46 co-family vacations.
What got you started crafting?
Janis is a very creative person and had the desire to begin making something out of the creative juices in her head. We started making one thing a week and then got the idea to open a little shop on Etsy last August. We now have over 170 items in our shop and the creative flow continues each day!
What is your source of inspiration?
We are inspire by things we see every day, things that have aesthetic appeal but are no longer suited for their original function (i.e. our Celtic Knot necklaces made with fabric covered electrical wire). We find inspiration in modern design, in everyday clothes that could use a little something.
What have you made recently?
We just finished creating a new earring collection made of wood circles. They are simple, modern and will go with everything! We were given small wooden pieces by a friend's father who thought we could do something with it. The pieces were hand sanded and painted with oil paint. They are so simple and modern and utilize a great repurposed find!!!
Where do you sell your crafts presently?
We sell on Etsy, in a local store featuring handmade artisans called The Collective Edge, and in Chicago's Handmade Market.
Why are handmade crafts important to you?
We love the heart and soul that goes into handmade items. They have an edge to them that mass-produced items don't have.
