Handmade because they provoke a sense of real life drama. There is a unperfectly human element to handmade that is so beautiful and refreshing in a rapidly produced world.
Hayley Stewart and Hunter Ruthrauff
We both have the same exact birthday. Yes, in the same year!
We have a mascot pup named Howie.
We studied in Denmark during Undergraduate.
We love to explore remote places.
What got you started crafting?
In architecture school we used tools like the laser cutter and 3D printing machine to create small scale models of buildings. Then we thought, why aren't we using this for all types of design? After working on some designs we tried it out and love the freedom that these tools brings to the table. Our options are endless.
What is your source of inspiration?
Biology and architecture are at the heart of Simbiotek. Many of our designs are inspired by a unique plant we see while traveling or by architectural sketches we draw while designing a building. We also draw inspiration from ancient culture and anthropology, reinterpreting traditional forms of human expression like pattern formation or carving into modern designs. While traveling, we often catalog images from both nature and architecture to act as a springboard of inspiration for our next project.
We generally start each project by designing an object’s basic form then adapt that form to a specific function, like a bracelet (often termed: Form Follows Function). During this process we often take the structural logic of a building or a plant and use it to define the object’s material quality, efficiency, and structure; a concept generally known as biomimcry.
What have you made recently?
We have recently made new laser cut jewelry that links together to create interesting forms and patterns that interlock. This idea then led to playing with different necklace/chain types such as recycled hemp twine.
Where do you sell your crafts presently?
We sell our crafts online at multiple E-commerce sites including Etsy and Threadflip. We also have items in several shops including the local indie mecca Graffiti Beach in South Park.
Why are handmade crafts important to you?
Handmade because they provoke a sense of real life drama. There is a unperfectly human element to handmade that is so beautiful and refreshing in a rapidly produced world.
