I have a business, not because I want to be a business owner, but because it allows me to express and share my passion and creativity for art and creating. My dream is to make a living as a professional bead artist.
Liz Rang
- Originally from SD, my husband and I live in a 5th wheel camper and travel full-time in Cali & the Pacific Northwest
- An only child, I've never gotten over being spoiled rotten (thanks Dad!)
- I rarely dress up or wear jewelry! (But to create it is my passion!!)
- I am a VERY picky eater, don't care for veggies or sauces and PLEASE don't let things on my plate touch - oooooh! (supppose that came with being spoiled?)
What got you started crafting?
Ever since I can remember, I've always been creative and loved to make things. I have never worn a lot of jewelry because I have a horrible metal allergy and when the age came to accessorize instead of being able to sport bling, I broke out in pink spots. This allergy ended up being my motivation to focus my crafting on jewelry, where I could make pieces that wouldn't bother my allergy. In late 2010, I got my stepdaughter a child's loom as a Christmas present. She didn't have the patience for it, but when I was trying to teach her how to use it I ended up getting hooked, and I haven't stopped looming since.
What is your source of inspiration?
So many things inspire me, it could be a building, a conversation, a picture in a catalogue ... mostly, though I am inspired by two things: nature and my beads. You'll see that reflected in the styles in my store. One is very elegant & contemporary (the pieces inspired by nature) and the other style is very whimsical and fun (the pieces inspired when I'm rummaging materials).
I have more ideas than I can ever possibly complete and they keep coming and coming, especially while I'm beading, I keep notes so I don't forget the ideas and my work is always evolving, changing ... I love trying new techniques, and adding new looks, feels & textures to the pieces.
What have you made recently?
Just within the last few weeks I created an caterpillar bracelet after a suggestion (what I originally thought was a slightly silly suggestion) from my husband. As I started thinking and designing on graph paper, the idea came alive. I thought of ways to incorporate existing and new embellishment techniques to create him, for example his legs & antenna. He just turned out to be a really fun, well-balanced looking piece.
I think everything has a personal touch because I really put my all into every piece - the pieces are a part of me, I give birth to them.
Where do you sell your crafts presently?
I just opened an Etsy store!! In fact, my Grand Opening is January 24th!
Why are handmade crafts important to you?
I have a business, not because I want to be a business owner, but because it allows me to express and share my passion and creativity for art and creating. My dream is to make a living as a professional bead artist.
