Fun Personalised Gifts

in Featured Crafters, Handmade, Home, Kids on 28/03/12

One of the things I love most about what I do is that a large percentage of my orders come from custom requests so I get to create & make new and diverse things all the time, which satisfies my short attention span!

Simmi Duffin

Random Facts About You?

1. I'm half Indian (which if you look at my picture is not apparent just by looking at me! My best friend thought I was a little bit deluded when I first announced this fact... until he met my Dad who looks the genuine article!)

2. I'm 5'10, my husband is 6'1 and all my previous boyfriends were quite tall, but all the celebrities that I fancy are quite short (Jon Bon Jovi, Kevin Bacon, Seth Green, Rob Lowe, etc!)

3. I completed the Walk The Walk marathon in 2011 (which astounded everyone that knows me as I'm inherently really quite lazy!)

4. I'm right handed, but I cannot brush my teeth with my right hand... I end up brushing my nose! But with my left hand, perfectly brushed teeth!

What got you started crafting?

I've always loved being crafty, but could never settle on a discipline long enough to get really good at it, so when my daughter turned 2 and was starting to learn her alphabet, I wanted to get her something she could play with that would also help teach her... I saw some felt letters on Etsy and thought I would probably be able to make something similar myself and that began my love affair of creating things from felt! A friend saw the letters I'd made and asked for some similar for her son and things just went from there.

What is your source of inspiration?

Anything & everything! Now that I've unleashed my creative side I can't seem to stop it and see possibilities in almost everything I look at!

What have you made recently?

The butterfly top was designed & created for my daughter's 3rd birthday as she was butterfly mad at that point and being October there weren't many clothes with butterfly designs in season, so I decided to create my own! As she is completely obsessed with pink and purple, they were the starting point and the rest of the design was created around that colour scheme!

Where do you sell your crafts presently?

I mainly sell online (through Facebook & Etsy) but I've done a couple of craft fairs, although as most of my items are made to order I expect selling online will continue to yield more results for me.

Why are handmade crafts important to you?

I love the idea of an item that I have put so much time, thought & effort into being really appreciated by its final owner and I don't think that is something you experience as much with mass produced goods.
